About herbal medicine

If you are looking for a natural, gentle and effective approach to health - then herbal medicine could be for you. Herbal medicine is a unique therapy that encourages the body to regain its natural health and balance by using high quality herbal blends specifically tailored for each patient. Its aim is not only to give you symptomatic relief, but also to address any underlying health issues and promote lasting benefits for your future well-being.

This is a therapy that is based on viewing you as an individual, not just a set of symptoms and which looks in-depth at your specific health profile and needs.

The practice of herbal medicine is more than just using herbs as remedies, although at its heart is the skilful blending of a wide range of different herbs by a medical herbalist, it is a therapy which looks at the management of your whole body health. It can therefore  include nutritional and life-style advice as part of your therapeutic plan.

Modern herbal medicine is firmly rooted in the western medical tradition and blends traditional knowledge with up to date scientific research. Herbal medicine still has much to offer. Men and women of all ages, from the very young to the elderly can benefit from herbal medicine. It is as relevant and useful to us today as it has always been

Can I use herbal medicine alongside prescribed medicines from my doctor?

In many cases, with expert advice, herbal medicine can be used safely alongside, or as an alternative to the conventional medicine from your doctor.

 Why visit a medical herbalist?

Self-treatment with proprietary herbal remedies may be effective for treating minor ailments, much like the over the counter medicines you would buy directly from your pharmacist. However, just as you might visit your doctor, for more complex and serious problems, if you choose to use herbal medicine, this where the skills and resources of a trained herbalist has a number of advantages.

Medical herbalists, who are members of professional bodies (such as the National Institute of Medical Herbalists) will have studied to a high level, including having a firm foundation in orthodox medical sciences. They are trained to diagnose using conventional medical diagnostic techniques, but most uniquely, they will possess an in-depth knowledge of the herbs they use. They are therefore able to make a much more knowledgeable assessment of the herbal treatment that you need.

They have access to a far wider range of herbs than would be available to the general public and have the skill and experience to use them appropriately for your condition and to formulate the right medication in the right dosages for you.

Consulting a medical herbalist is not an expensive alternative to self-treatment with herbs – it is a much more in-depth and expert therapy. You are accessing a professional with a detailed and long  training in the medical sciences and the medicinal use of herbs. Herbal prescriptions are structured and complex blends of herbs designed to have a set of supportive actions for your individual condition.

Herbal medicine can be a very effective strategy for the relief of symptoms and for obtaining longer term health benefits.

What happens at a consultation?

As a medical herbalist I haves been trained to treat you as an individual. At your first consultation I will take a very detailed health history which will allow me to obtain a clear picture of your health, both past and present. This will allow me to assess what may be underlying and impacting on your current condition.

I have been trained in diagnosis and physical examination and with your permission I may carry out checks such as blood pressure and urine tests if this is appropriate, during the consultation.

I will ask for details of any medication you are taking, so that I can check this for possible interactions to make sure that the herbs I prescribe are safe and suitable for you. This information be used to plan your treatment strategy and to formulate a herbal remedy that uniquely tailored to your needs.

You will normally be prescribed 3-4 weeks of herbal medicine on your first visit. A follow up consultation is normally arranged  so that your progress with the medicine can be assessed and any changes that might be needed can be made.

How long might I need to take herbal medicine?

This will all depend on your condition as some problems respond more quickly to herbal medicine than others and you may only need a short course of treatment. I would be able to advise you more accurately if you would like to contact with details of your condition before booking your first consultation. As a medical herbalist I haves been trained to treat you as an individual.
